school zone safety

As students head back to school, it's important to remember that school zones will become busy and active around Tennessee. Unfortunately, recent research suggests that drivers engage in unsafe behaviors in active school zones. In a 2022 study conducted by AAA, a staggering 41% of drivers openly admitted to speeding in active school zones, while 29% admitted to using their cellphones while behind the wheel. Let's keep school zones safe by keeping these four things in mind:

4 Driving Tips For School Zone Safety

  1. Put Away Your Cell Phone.

Not only is it dangerous to use a cell phone while driving, but it's also illegal. In 2019, Tennessee enacted the Hands Free Law which prohibits drivers from holding mobile devices, sending text messages, watching videos on phones, and more. Violating the Hands Free Law can result in fines and points on your driving record.

  1. Slow Down.

Always slow down and follow the posted speed limit in school zones, which can be as low as five miles per hour. School zones are bustling with foot traffic on crosswalks, driveways, and sidewalks near and around the school. By being patient and respecting the lowered speed limits, you help keep pedestrians and children safe as they get to and from school.

  1. Be Aware Of Buses.

If a school bus stops to load/unload passengers or if the bus stop sign is deployed, drivers in Tennessee are required to come to a complete stop before passing the bus from either direction and may not proceed until the bus resumes motion or the school bus driver signals that you may proceed.

  1. Be On The Lookout.

Pay close attention to guards, traffic personnel, and police officers who are in charge of managing school zones. Their directions take the lead over any traffic signs or signals on the road. They are there to maintain order and keep everyone safe, including students, pedestrians, and drivers like yourself.
