Five Tips for a Safe Halloween
It’s that time of year again when children get to dress up as scary mummies or their favorite superheroes and run around ringing doorbells for candy! It’s pretty magical, and we’ve all been there. However, it’s important to make sure you and your child are properly prepared to keep Halloween safe and the happiest of holidays. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind:
1.) Walk safely
All children should be supervised by an adult, especially at night. Cross the street at corners and always heed traffic signals and cross walks. Also, stick to sidewalks or paths, but if you must walk along the road, walk against traffic so you're more visible to drivers.
2.) Make sure your child can be seen
Apply reflective tape to your child’s costume to make sure he or she can easily be seen by drivers on the road. It's also a good idea to carry glowsticks or flashlights to help your child see and be seen.
3.) Choose an appropriate costume.
Be sure to choose a costume for your child that isn’t too long. If material is dragging on the ground, this can lead to tripping and accidents. The same goes for masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Stick with non-toxic makeup or face paint.
4.) Use flexible props
If your child’s costume requires weapon-like props such as a sword, be sure to use rubber or plastic versions. You wouldn’t want your child to accidentally hurt him or herself or a friend.
5.) Throw away all unwrapped candy
Once you’ve arrived home, it’s time to sort through the loot! Throw away any pieces of candy that appear to be previously opened or unwrapped. Only keep pieces in their original wrappings.
Have a Happy and safe Halloween, everyone!
