When you send a child off to college, the check list of things “not to forget” can seem endless. From essentials such as books and toiletries to intangibles like tuition and teaching them how to do laundry, it’s easy to forget one very important item: insurance. Be sure to talk to your agent about your insurance coverage and how it applies to your child now living away from home.

Imagine getting the call from your child that the shiny, new laptop you just purchased for him or her was stolen from the dorm room. Does your homeowners policy cover this? Your child needs immediate medical care. Does your health insurance cover this? Your child let a friend drive his or her car and they got into a fender bender. Does your auto insurance cover this? These are all great scenarios to explore with your agent.

Insurance needs also evolve as your child transitions from dorm life to off-campus housing such as an apartment or rental home. At this point, your homeowners policy may no longer extend to your child’s belongings or dwelling.

This may be a good time to consider purchasing a renters insurance policy to cover his or her belongings. Renters insurance can also provide liability coverage, which could save you from paying out of pocket if accidental damage to the rental property occurs or your child is found legally responsible for someone else’s injuries that occurred in their home. For the cost of a pizza a month, a renters insurance policy could come in handy down the road.
